North Shore 2013 - Friday

Considering it's mid-September, it's about time I bite the bullet and start sorting through the hundreds of pictures we (ok, mostly "I") took at the North Shore...in July.

Friday morning, the pediatrician called and gave us the ok to head north and a new prescription for Walter.  We decided to take our time getting to our destination - so we made a Gander Mountain stop before heading over to Target to pick up the new medication.  The Benadryl seemed to be doing it's job keeping the hives at bay and allowed Walter to get a nap in on the drive.  As we neared Duluth, the mood in our car turned sour and we discussed turning around - but wouldn't you know it, it was nothing a few Happy Meals couldn't take care of!    We met up with Gramps, Grandma, Madison (cousin) and the Mimis at the traditional Two Harbors DQ stop.

Checking in with the DQ bear.

We caught up with more cousins at Gooseberry Falls.  The boys enjoyed having a little time to explore and climb with the Mimis.

Henry and a Civilian Conservation Worker.

Henry couldn't wait to get to our cabin.  When we finally climbed out of the car, he stretched his arms and said, "Ahh, this is Paradise!"  It really must be his personal paradise because he was out on the rocks all day long, no matter what the weather.

Enjoying dinner with their cousins - getting ready for lots of weekend fun!

Walter vs. The Monkey Bars

The month of July was one for the books.  One of those memorable ones that makes you want to cry and laugh at the same time.  It started with me getting sick on the fourth of July and then the following Sunday Walter came down with the same symptoms.  On Tuesday I brought him in to the pediatrician, who got called away to the hospital so we ended up in Urgent Care.  The x-rays showed pneumonia so they put him on an antibiotic and we headed home.

I was still sick, so I went in to our local clinic on Wednesday morning and they gave me a prescription, too.  On our way home, we drove past the park and the boys wanted to play for a few minutes.  It was a beautiful day and we'd been cooped up all week.  Poor Henry was tired of being stuck with two sickies who couldn't play tag!  Walter's Motrin was going strong so I figured as long as they weren't running it would be ok...I was wrong.

Henry decided to do the monkey bars and Walter followed.  Walter took a flying leap but slipped off the bars and landed on his left hand and arm.  When he got up, I noticed his arm was hanging in an odd way but he quickly stopped crying. But when I felt his wrist I called Nate and asked if we could stop by the office and have Grandma Jo check it out (she was/is a nurse).  They were waiting in the parking lot for us and we briefly thought he had escaped any broken bones, but after Grandma moved his wrist, fingers and arm around for a number of minutes his eyes welled up as he said, "Grandma, stop.  That hurts."

The local clinic told me I could bring him in and they did an x-ray showing his wrist was broken.  The good news was that the orthopedic doctor was in the neighboring town and could give him a much better cast than this doctor said she could give us.  So, we dropped Henry off at Grandma and Grandpa A's house again and drove to the hospital.

Just as the doctor was about to start putting on the cast, he asked if we thought Walter's elbow was bothering him, "Yes, it looks a little swollen and he said it hurts, but the clinic didn't say anything about his elbow..."  Turns out they hadn't done x-rays of his elbow, so that was the next step...

More x-rays
(I'm thinking after the number of times I've worn one of those special aprons this summer, I should invest in one for myself!)

When Dr. S came back, we could tell right away it wasn't good news.  He had two breaks in his wrist and his elbow had a break that was a combination of two breaks and would possibly need surgery.  He thought we should see a pediatric specialist at Gillette - "Well, that's one hospital we haven't hit this year!"  Dr. S put on a temporary cast and we drove home to pack.

Our trip to the North Shore in 2 days seemed unlikely, but I packed every body's bags while planning for a possible hospital stay and a trip to Lake Superior.  After lots of phone calls with Amy at Gillette, we ended up seeing another Dr. S on Thursday afternoon.  Many x-rays later, she decided that she would put him in a very formed cast, hoping it would hold his elbow exactly where she wanted it.  We could go to the North Shore and see her on Tuesday.  Hopefully the elbow would still look good, but if not, Walter's pneumonia would have improved enough to do surgery.

Earlier that morning, our pediatrician switched Walter's antibiotic because he was having some bad side effects from it.  After getting his cast on, Walter took the first dose of a new antibiotic.  Around 40 minutes later we noticed that his abdomen, chest, and legs were covered in hives so we got in touch with the on-call staff at our normal clinic and waited to hear about switching meds again.  Thankfully, he took it all in stride.

Fourth of July

The boys were really excited about the Fourth of July this year because we decided they could stay up late and watch the fireworks!

We met our friends, Lauren and Addie, at the pool on the third.  That night we went to the school Ice Cream Social and then set out our blanket and put on the bug spray for the fireworks.  Henry and Walter loved everything...Mom and Dad weren't big fans of the crabby factor the next day!

The next morning we got up early and did the Fun Run/Walk at school and Henry ran in the race for his age group (he's in the blue shirt).  He'd been looking forward to it since last year!  He just can't help but look around and enjoy watching everybody running.

After a few meltdowns, we headed home and relaxed for a little while before driving to the lake where we had dinner with Gramps and Grandma L, Uncle Dan and Aunt Gayle, and Mimi Megan.  We even took a little cruise around the lake while having blueberry pie.

I started feeling a little under-the-weather after we got home from the Fun Run but figured it was the heat and humidity combined with being tired.  Turns out I was sick, so Nate took Henry and Walter to the lake on Saturday so I could have some time to rest.  By Sunday, Walter was sick with the same thing...which began an interesting month for us.

Fishing and having fun with cousin George.

Hooked on Fishing

Fast forward again - all the way to the end of June.
(I am soooo far behind!)
Walter caught this bass while we were visiting Grandma and Grandpa L and he was very happy about it.  As a matter of fact, he still likes to tell people about it.  He's usually asking for his fishing rod as soon as we pile out of the car at the lake.

Whenever he catches a fish, he likes to touch their eyes and see if they have any teeth before throwing them back in the lake.

Blast from the Past

...Because June seems like ages ago, doesn't it?  Nate had these on his phone and they made us laugh, so I had to include them here.

Otto's Favorite Spots

For some reason bags and plants were highly desirable when it came to relaxing.

Henry's 6th Birthday

A few days before Henry's birthday, we got together at the lake to celebrate three important birthdays - Mimi Megan's, Grandma L's, and Henry's.  Back in May, Henry and Walter decided they wanted to share Jabba the Hutt's Palace Lego Set for their birthdays...until the next day when Walter changed his mind.  Henry happily agreed to take on full responsibility for his dream set, which became an early birthday present from Grandpa, Grandma and the Mimis.

Henry has enjoyed learning to play basketball and soccer this year.  These gifts have gotten a lot of use this summer.

With Grandma and Mimi Megan (and the cake)

And then a quick pontoon ride.

Henry woke on his birthday, ran through the balloons outside the bedroom door and begged to open his new Legos!
This was the Year of Lego Sets...I think we spent two days putting sets together - the things I've learned as a mom!

We were going to hit the pool in the afternoon, so we thought it would be wise to sing "Happy Birthday" and cut into the ice cream cake immediately after lunch.

Off to the pool where we met our friends.  On this day, they spent a ton of time racing in the kiddie pool.
On your marks, get set...

...tough pose...

...and then Amar had enough of that and jumped in...

But they had to try a few more poses -

-before continuing their races.

And then Walter decided he was ready to join in on the photo stuff, but the other three were already at the other end of the pool getting ready to jump in the water again.

We stayed at the pool until it was time for supper.  Henry had requested French fries and mashed potatoes ("Oh, those are the same food - let's have French fries.") and hamburgers.  Mom added salad and fruit to the menu.

It's hard to believe how much Henry has grown and learned this year.  He keeps us on our toes with his sense of humor, deep thinking, and daily inventions.  We love him to pieces.
